Birding Around Las Vegas
Lake Mead

Avi Kwa Ame National Monument, located just south of Las Vegas (map), has habitat for some amazing southern Nevada birds, but it is big, wild country with no real "hot spots." Rather, Avi Kwa Ame is a place to wander around in good habitat, commune with the spirits, and listen to and watch for birds. For the best results, look for places with water, as water attracts and concentrates desert birds.

For More Information and details of getting to Avi Kwa Ame and other information, see Avi Kwa Ame National Monument.

Birding Around Avi Kwa Ame National Monument

Pine Spring. A small spring in desert mountains where water brings birds from far and wide. The road is a bit rough, but with an appropriate vehicle, birders in Wee Thump might add this interesting add-on to the trip.

Searchlight Town Park. A small urban park with trees, grass, a bit of water, and Curve-billed Thrashers in Nevada.

Wee Thump Joshua Tree Wilderness. Big, wide-open desert with a forest of Joshua Trees. No water, so no hotspots, but this is the place to see Gilded Flickers in Nevada.

Happy birding! All distances, elevations, and other facts are approximate.
