General: Sleepy Orange Butterflies (Abaeis nicippe) are medium-sized butterflies recognized during summer by their yellow wings, yellow bodies, and small black bar on the leading edge of the underside of the hindwings (seen when they hold their wings together at rest). When open the forewing has a small black spot. Males have well defined black borders on the outer margins; but the borders are duller in females. During winter, underside of hindwing becomes red, brown, or tan.

Taxonomy: Family: Pieridae (whites and sulphurs); Subfamily: Coliadinae (sulphurs). Formerly Eurema nicippe.

Where to Find: Sleepy Oranges occur throughout North America, from about northern Nevada east to southern New England.
