General: Fremont's Phacelia (Phacelia fremontii) is an annual forb with purple, tubular flowers that bloom in the spring. Inside the flower, the throat is yellow with a white ring separating the purple from the yellow. The leaves are long and narrow, and they have differing degrees of dissection.
Fremont's Phacelia is a common component of vegetation communities in dry, well-drained gravelly areas on bajadas into the lower mountains in the Lower Sonoran (Creosote-Bursage Flats), and Upper Sonoran (Mojave Desert Scrub) life zones.
Around Las Vegas, look for Fremont's Phacelia at lower elevations during spring at places such as Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, and Mojave National Preserve.
