General Description: Fish Crows (Corvus ossifragus) are all black with a purplish gloss in good light. Fish Crows are similar to American Crows, but Fish Crows have a smaller head, smaller bill, longer tail, and stiffer wing-beats. Best separated by voice, which, to this Yankee, sounds like a nasal southern drawl compared to American Crows.
Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Corvidae.
Favored Habitat: Primarily coastal areas; also inland, especially along rivers. |

Where to Find: Don't look for Fish Crows around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them on trips to the East Coast and Southeastern US where they can be found throughout the southeastern coastal plain, but primarily along coastal waters and inland rivers from east Texas to New England.
Comments: Crows are gregarious birds often seen foraging in great numbers. |
