General Description: Black-chinned Sparrows (Spizella atrogularis) are dark gray overall with brown wings, a pink bill, and a long tail, looking superficially like a long-tailed "Gray-headed" Junco. Adult males in breeding plumage have black on the face and chin. Females and juveniles lack this black.
Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Emberizidae.
Favored Habitat: Desert scrub.
Where to Find: Around Las Vegas, look for this species during spring and early summer in the desert scrub below Willow Springs Picnic Area and Lost Creek Canyon, both in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Otherwise, look for this species farther south or in southern California during summer and along the US-Mexican border during winter. |
