Overview

Nawghaw Poa Road (Sloan Canyon Road) is the main access to the northern portions of Sloan Canyon National Conservation Area, the North McCullough Wilderness Area, and the Petroglyph Trailhead. This trailhead provides the shortest route to Petroglyph Canyon, one of the most spectacular petroglyph galleries in southern Nevada.

Nawghaw Poa Road is a good, paved road, and the City of Henderson roads that connect to it have been paved as the urban area builds out.

Nawghaw Poa Road is open to entry for vehicles daily 8:00AM to 4:30pm (except certain holidays). Drivers can exit the area anytime. Hikers and bikers can enter anytime. The contact station at the end of Nawghaw Poa Road is staffed by volunteers and is open sporadically despite what signs say.

Access

Nawghaw Poa Road is accessed from Democracy Drive, which is on the south edge of Henderson. Time will tell what turns out to be the best access route. For now, the best access is via Bicentennial Parkway and Via Firenze Ave to Democracy Drive.

The Road

From Democracy Drive (Table 1, Site 1779), Nawghaw Poa Road runs south and passes through a gate where inbound traffic can be blocked. Outbound traffic can bypass the gate by driving over road spikes when exiting the area after the gate is closed.

The paved Nawghaw Poa Road winds up the hillside for 0.7 miles to the parking lot and Visitor Contact Station at the trailhead (Site 1194). A paved bicycle and walking trail parallels the road.
