American Dipper (Cinclus mexicanus)

General Description: American Dippers (Cinclus mexicanus) are bark gray birds of moving water where they exhibit the unusual behavior of jumping into rushing streams to walk around on the bottom and catch bugs. On a rock out in the stream, they bob up and down and make a high-pitched call, one per bob.

Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Cinclidae.

Favored Habitat: Mountain streams. American Dippers rarely fly over dry land.

Where to Find: Around Las Vegas, look for American Dippers on the Riverside Walk in Zion National Park or in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California.

Comments: American Dippers typically nest under or near waterfalls, making a covered nest of moss and other soft materials.
